Parons Danse! 2022

Image
Parlons Danse invites participants to reflect on the March Dance festival in French. Guests are encouraged to share their thoughts on the festival's 'must-sees'. The event creates a space for French speakers to immerse themselves in the festival and beyond - everything dance in Sydney. Who knows, could this be the start of an ongoing discussion group? Our conversation will be mediated by Agnès Michelet. This is set to be a fun opportunity for native Francophones living in Australia to rekindle a sense of 'chez eux' together with Australian Francophiles. The common thread is an avid interest in dance - seeing it, making it, researching it, writing about it, doing it and perhaps most importantly, talking about it. Junko Asaba & Yana Myronenko - Colour Factura 2022

Image
With cardboard, paper and hessian, Junko Asaba and Yana Myronenko create visual works which follow the practice of combining traditional media and craft with the vocabulary of geometric abstraction. In her work, Junko is exploring the expressive possibilities of tension and freedom. She usually starts with great curiosity and a mixture of expectation and fear as she explores the unknown without preconception or planning. 'I try to find something, to discover something interesting emerging from the materials'. In these works, she was searching for softness and yielding in the rigidity of cardboard and found that squeezing produced a power dynamic. It is her wish that the viewer will experience the tension between the unexpected fluidity of the materials and the structure of her work. Yana finds inspiration in the European artists of the early 20th century when the invention of abstraction gave artists the freedom to break through the representational conventions of academic art

'The Xinjiang Emergency' In conversation with Michael Clarke 2022

Image
The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is the site of the largest mass repression of an ethnic and/or religious minority in the world today with researchers estimating that at least one million people have been detained there at some point without trial since 2016. Meanwhile, outside of these detention centres more than ten million Turkic Muslim minorities are subjected to a network of high-tech surveillance systems, checkpoints and interpersonal monitoring. What are the causes of this repressive turn in the Communist Party of China's approach to Xinjiang? What are the short and long-term consequences of state policy for Xinjiang, the Uyghur people, and the People's Republic of China (PRC)? And what does all this mean for Australia - is it, as Beijing insists, 'a matter of China's internal affairs'? Or should Australia take a stronger stand, through, for example, the application of sanctions? A new book edited by Dr Michael Clarke, UTS:ACRI Adjunct Professor and Seni

Queer Contemporary: I want a future that lives up to my past 2022

Image
Curated to coincide with the 2022 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, this exhibition brings together a range of distinct LGBTQI voices from within the NAS community, including teaching staff and alumni. It presents works in dialogue about the nature of contemporary art and politics and possible personal, local and global futures through queer visual languages and points of view. I want a future that lives up to my past juxtaposes artists and works to make visible queer aesthetics that are not tied to obvious representations of identity and sexuality, but are materially grounded in the ways LGBTQI lived experience and creative practice demands a range of navigations and interventions in mainstream cultural forms and interpretations. Against the global backdrop of the climate crisis, our second pandemic, and the last decade's conservative backlash against the human rights of those of us who live in the margins, the works included offer subtle and complex articulations of ideas, imag

Mara! Big Band 'Zashto?' 2022

Image
Riverside Theatres, Mara Music & SIMA present the World Premiere of Mara! Big Band 'Zashto?' Riverside welcomes the world premiere of Zashto? in March as part of SIMA's Jazz: NOW Summer Festival . The theme of the Mara! Big Band's new 60-minute musical suite 'Zashto?' ('Why?' in the Bulgarian language) is the experience of migration to Australia and the spectre of incarceration (physical and psychological) that has hovered over each wave of migration in the past 230 years. Through the stories of three women who arrived in Australia at very different times in our history, we investigate the fact that deprivation of liberty or trauma has scarred the migration experience of many in our community and we pose the question 'Zashto?' The 'protagonists' are a young female convict who was arrested in Ireland at the age of 16 and transported in 1803, a Bulgarian migrant and an Iranian refugee. The libretto is drawn from poetry and texts written

Subplot 2022

Image
Subplot is an exhibition featuring the work of recent year 12 graduate Otto Paton, currently on display at Object Space at Australian Design Centre. Subplot was made in response to things that have been happening in - and under - Sydney's Inner West. As construction crews worked on the Rozelle Interchange of the WestConnex development, creating a complex network of tunnels (some up to 55 metres deep), Otto began to imagine, using boxboard and glue, how various environments would look if they were cut away from the earth around them, revealing what is beneath but seldom seen. Object Space is a window gallery located in the window of the Australian Design Centre HQ on William Street in Darlinghurst. The exhibition space has direct street frontage, is accessible to view 24 hours a day and is lit for viewing at night. https://upnext.com.au/event/subplot-2022 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Check out our Yo

Saving our Food 2022

Image
We all love food, but the ways we grow, make, sell and consume it causes a scandalous amount of waste. The land footprint used to grow this wasted food every year occupies an area the size of Canada and India combined. Food waste also uses vast quantities of water and is linked to 8-11% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In response, the UN has called for food waste to be halved by 2030, and as a country that makes a lot of food - we export about 70% of our agricultural output - Australia has a considerable role to play. Australia started its response to this challenge with the release of the National Food Waste Strategy in 2017. Join pioneering global expert on wasted food, Dr Christian Reynolds, in conversation with UNSW's Chris McElwain, as they explain why we waste so much food and discuss the twin challenges of saving more food and safely managing the food we cannot avoid wasting. https://upnext.com.au/event/saving-our-food-2022 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/s

Against the global backdrop of the climate crisis, our second pandemic, and the last decade's conservative backlash agai

Orange Thrower 2022

Image
The night is still. The air is hot and thick. From up on the roof, matching houses stretch as far as the eye can see. Welcome to the sunny suburb of Paradise. While her folks are back in Johannesburg, Zadie is holding down the family fort. This means keeping her little sis away from bush doofs, avoiding the cute boy next door, and smiling when her nice white neighbours try to touch her hair. All that changes when an unexpected visitor bursts back into Zadie's life in the middle of the night, breaking the silence with loud music and even louder opinions. To make matters worse, someone's been pelting the house with oranges. All of a sudden, Zadie's got a big, sticky suburban mess on her hands. Orange Thrower is the award-winning debut play from Kirsty Marillier . A fresh twist on the Australian coming-of-age story, this play is a joyful comedy, a curious mystery, and a poignant love letter to South African women. Directed with zest by musician, performer and director Zindzi O
