From traditional shop blessings in Chinatown, to LED dragons and lions lighting up the harbour at Circular Quay, CNY 2022: Day and Night aims to capture the spirit of these scenes through three sets of two banners, featuring the Dragon, the Lion, and the zodiac Tiger. Each pair consists of a red Day version recalling a traditional festive ambience, and a complementary Night version, which transforms the same theme into a modern display of dazzling light. About the artist: I am a Sydney born, raised and based Chinese-Australian creative. Jess Bradford, 'Moon on Water' 2022

Image
The title of Jess Bradford's solo exhibition Moon on Water takes its inspiration from an old East Asian proverb 'Mirror Flower, Water Moon'. Much like the slipperiness of time and memory, the proverb itself is also hard to pin down. Perhaps one can think of it as the unattainability of something, it can be seen but not touched, like a flower's reflection in a mirror or the way that the moon shines upon the surface of the water. What we see in those reflections is a mere copy, a mirage. Taking this metaphor of a reflection Bradford has created a new suite of ceramics and miniature paintings that engage with the many layers of memory and representation. The imagery of animals that appear in these new paintings - one of which one is coloured, something new for Bradford - is taken from the artist's archive of found photographs of Haw Par Villa, a 'cultural theme park' in Singapore. The animals however are actually just another mirage, they are sculptures held w

Banner Galleries: Andrew Yee - Then & Now 2022

Image
Then & Now is a collection of works celebrating a handful of Sydney's iconic Asian businesses that have shut their doors or suffered from the Covid-19 pandemic. Every piece juxtaposes the fierce tiger against each establishment's iconic façade to create empowering images, showing just how vital they were to Sydney's identity. I wish my banners to become more than just artworks; I want to make historical documents that these businesses existed and resonated with communities. In the Asian community, these businesses were spaces of safety, comfort and experiences that will leave everlasting memories. About the artist: Andrew Yee (b. 1989, Sydney) is multidisciplinary artist working across illustration, video, installation and podcasting. Yee's formative years spent in Sydney's East Ryde district created a disconnect with his surroundings, searching for his identity through a consumption of 2000s manga, pro-wrestling, the spectacle of K-pop and the emotional draw of

Chinatown scenic overlay: Contained by Susan Chen 2022

Image
The Chinese philosophy of yin-yang describes the notion of opposing forces being complimentary and interdependent in the natural world. The 2022 Lunar New Year welcomes the tiger as the new zodiac animal, a creature that is both revered and feared. In Chinese culture, the tiger is a symbol of power, strength and positive energy; the greatest earthly power and the physical embodiment of yang. In 2022, the tiger is in its water element. Water is understood to be the most yin in character of the five elements in nature. Chen's artwork, Contained, brings together these two elements of yin and yang, where both tiger and water share common opposing characteristics such as tranquillity, stillness and calmness, while also capable of demonstrating great strength, ferocity, and power. The artwork also includes narratives around the artists' cross-cultural experience as an Asian-Australian. About the artist Susan Chen is a Chinese Australian artist, working out of her studio in Sydney'

At What Cost? 2022

Image
Belvoir presents the world premiere of At What Cost?, a robust and provocative modern tragedy by award-winning Palawa playwright Nathan Maynard, from 29 January to 20 February. In Maynard's home state of Lutrawita (Tasmania), Boyd's got enough on his plate between keeping a family together and his responsibilities to land and people. But something's happening. Every year more and more folk are claiming to be Palawa too. Folk no-one's heard of until now, who haven't been 'round before. Are they legit? Or are they 'tick-a-box'? Who decides? And how? If Boyd's going to take everyone forward, they're all going to have to go back, old mob or new, into the island's knotty past. And they might not like what they find there... https://upnext.com.au/event/at-what-cost-2022 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Check out our Youtube channel UpNext Sydney Youtube
