Full Circle 2023

Image
Good works of art are timeless, and the artists in this exhibition prove that they are still contemporary. Paintings from the estate of David Aspden highlight his use of distinct blocks of colour or blackness to represent the colours of Sydney Harbour bouncing off the water, or of the shapes of leaves silhouetted against the sun. Tony Coleing's Broken Pipe sculptures were conceived in 1970, but not made until 2023. Richard Larter's distinct colourful paintings from the 1980s gyrate before us, their colours both harmonious and jarring. https://upnext.com.au/event/full-circle-2023 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Check out our Youtube channel UpNext Sydney Youtube

A magical night is guaranteed.

Raw to Refined 2023

Image
Clay and wood can be expressed in many outcomes. Beauty can be found in the art of discovery. This exhibition enables viewers to discover the transformation, contrast and beauty of different raw clay bodies dug from Geoff Hawkins' property, along with porcelain clay, that have been hand formed into a range of artworks - functional and non-functional, unglazed and glazed, fired at different temperatures and in different conditions. It also includes wood sculpture pieces, showing similar refinements to the rough, weathered, natural timber from which the pieces originated. The pieces are an embodiment of forces or processes of creation, transformation and evolution. The inspiration for Hawkins' artwork (clay and wood) is generally founded in nature. He tries to find the essence of the medium he is using and work with it and try to let it drive the results. The initial idea evolves. Form, texture, beauty and simplicity are drivers. Toni Messiter 'It was a difficult conversation' | Exhibition 2023

Image
A departure from her typical subject matter, It Was a Difficult Conversation turns to the environment, where Messiter considers the tree - beings who have memory and sensation - as protagonist. Unlike conventional landscape where the environment is a scene for the human, Messiter's training in portraiture remains present with each tableau focusing on the mood of the tree. With a distinct gothic framework, the tree as protagonist is a clear continuation of the artist's previous investigations of the subconscious and shadow. Messiter writes, 'I left the foreground to move into the background'. Interested in the notions of haunting, she considers the subjectivity of nature, the shadows of the trees and asks us: what are the difficult conversations? Karen Barbouttis: Fading Existence II 2023

Image
Karen Barbouttis' exhibition Fading Existence II is centred around maritime maps from the early 1800's used by the Dunbar captains. Michael Rhodes, a relative of the Dunbar family offered these maps to Karen for the purpose of giving them an extended life as artwork. These maps are original, the paper fragile, complete with captains' plots and markings. She chose to honour the flora and fauna native to the regions. Karen's drawings are images that work to the beauty of the markings of the maps. 'I am irresistibly drawn to the simplicity, immediacy, and the honesty, of the pencil line on paper,' she says. In 2011, Karen entered her first art competition, The Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, and was announced the Winner for 2011. Since then, she participated in both solo and group exhibitions in various galleries, in both Australia and Greece, as well as group exhibitions as finalist in various art competitions. https://upnext.com.au/event/karen-barbouttis-fadi

HomeBody 2023

Image
This series honors the depths of darkness we each hold, inviting us courageously through embodiment, exploration, witnessing and release. Coming home into the body often brings us face to face with the buried, hidden, the darkness and tension that has laid dormant in the body-mind over time. In the recognising, we mirror the energies of winter. As the days grow longer and darker, we bury ourselves in our homes, in our layers, sitting beneath the heavy blanket of the season - the outside world colder, brisker, harsher. This practice cultivates the boldness to sit with these sensations, to have faith in impermanence. We invite in the knowingness that each tension is matched with resolution; that it is the same air that gusts and howls, as it is the silent fuel for the fire, or the gentlest rustle on a still night. Change is the only constant, and this too shall pass, so join us to go deeper while the darkness is here. The practise is open to small group of 8-10 to help allow everyone the

Consent 2023

Image
Following a smash-hit West End run, Nina Raine's dazzlingly clever play about truth, justice and consent will be brought to Seymour Centre for its Australian premiere by the award-winning Outhouse Theatre Co. from 1st to 24th June. Why is Justice blind? Is she impartial? Or is she blinkered? Barrister friends, Ed and Tim, take opposing briefs in a rape case. At home, their own lives begin to unravel as accusations are made, truths are challenged, and judgements imposed. A 2023 Seymour Season Production, this intricately constructed play pings with questions of consent not just sexual but personal, probing the murky moral terrain of the courtroom and the marriage bed, and putting Justice herself in the dock. Known for her extraordinary 2010 play, Tribes , Raine's Consent is rich with intelligence, wit and power and 'elevates its writer into the major league of British playwrights' (Variety). https://upnext.com.au/event/consent-2023 Check out our website https://upnext.c
