Stolen focus with Johann Hari 2022

Image
Our ability to pay attention is collapsing. It's not just you, our focus has been stolen by powerful external forces. New York Times best-selling author Johann Hari has been on a mission to uncover why this is happening to us and whether we can get our focus back. What he discovered were structural problems rather than the individuals personal failing. In conversation with UNSW's Rosalind Dixon, they explore why it is so important that we pay attention to this 'attention revolution' and what we can do to get our focus back. https://upnext.com.au/event/stolen-focus-with-johann-hari-2022 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Check out our Youtube channel UpNext Sydney Youtube

Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery is delighted to present GABAN: House of Strange , an exhibition of new works by Brook Andrew and an exhibition of historic works by the late Robert Campbell Jnr, in the artist's second posthumous exhibition with the gallery. GABAN: House of Strange is a series of new portraits and scenes by Brook Andrew that recall his earlier work Gun Metal Grey , 2007 and the experimental mixed media process he developed in collaboration with Stewart Russell and Danica Miller. The images are derived from video stills and photographs the artist made with a group of performers in Berlin during an intense period of rehearsals for the new video work of post-traumatic theatre, GABAN . Flickering in and out of focus, depending on the light source, the figures are elusive - their appearance broken by the folds and imperfections of the printing process which register like scars and ripples of electricity. There is a play of visibility, a conflict between what is seen and not see

'Mother May We' by Mel Ree 2022

Image
If you're a first generation Australian woman. If you're the daughter of a black mother. If you've inherited their pain - of escaping the horrors of third world conditions, of carrying physical and emotional trauma, of reckoning with an unfamiliar western frontier that regards you as 'other' - then you'll know how difficult it is to ask for permission to heal. How can you balance your history with your unwritten future? How can you inhabit an individual identity when you've inherited the truths of your ancestors? How can you open your arms and feel the sunshine on your skin when secrecy and shame drain the colour from your parents' eyes? Poet Mel Ree rhapsodises about intergenerational trauma and marries ancestral and modern truths in a truly epic and cathartic performance. Peppering playful performance art with humbling, hard truths, Mother May We is a motivational manifesto for how to heal. https://upnext.com.au/event/mother-may-we-by-mel-ree-2022 Ch

Image
We see Macbeth's three Weird Sisters (aka, The Witches) at the beginning and end of Shakespeare's play, but how do these siblings pass the time in-between? The Weird Sisters is an improvised comedy focussing on all the 'double, double toil and trouble' of sisterly relationships. Inspired by the audience's input, legendary improvisers Anne Wilson, Linda Calgaro, and Linette Voller (Lady Fingers) draw you in to their quirky brand of improv, and the up and down world of three slightly kooky, slightly spooky sisters. Prepare to cackle your Bard off! Winners Best Ensemble and Best Show, New Zealand Improv Festival 2015 '...Three talented women... set their rope at just the right level to both thrill and entertain...all three women are equal parts foil and star… Lady Fingers, like the sponge cakes that share their name, are quite delicious.' Paula Jenkins: Sea Me, As I Am 2022

Image
S ea Me, As I Am investigates the compositions and details of the headlands and views from the cliffs between Wimbie Beach and Lilli Pilli on the South East coast of NSW. The paintings focus on the rock formations, angles, depth of field, and vegetation unique to the area. Wimbie Beach is close to the artist's heart, having spent time there during her upbringing at her grandparents' home, and most recently last summer. 'My painting trips always provide me with rich inspiration, and involve a lot of plein air painting, documenting, and capturing the surrounds. Sleeping in swags under the stars gives me a sense of immersion with all the sounds, smells, and beauty of the landscape.' Sea Me, As I Am has a vivid and other-worldly colour palette, accentuating pinks, yellows, and blues found within the landscape. 'Working with colour is my artistic voice. I'm constantly aiming to push the boundaries with colour experimentation and finding new ways of applying marks
