In this 5 week course you will learn several authentic, vernacular Jazz steps which can be used while social dancing. The class is rooted in Lindy Hop, a specific style of Swing dancing from the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, NYC. A wonderfully common characteristic of the Lindy Hop was to have 'Breakaways' where the partnership released hands and danced independently, yet still in sync. The solo Jazz steps were pulsing, rhythmic and allowed the dance to beautifully expand in exuberance. It is strongly recommended that you have a good foundation in Swing dancing and Lindy Hop prior to taking this class. This class is an intermediate level. No partner is required. 'She Didn't Like to throw Things Out' is an exhibition of posters and large scale assemblages by artist Fiona Buckland at The Shop Gallery Glebe, 112 Glebe Point Road, Glebe. Through the recontextualisation of images and text, Fiona Buckland explores themes as broad as popular culture, feminism, mythology and the ways that we learn and think about art. The show is comprised of collages that have been reconfigured as A1 and A2 commercially printed posters and large scale timber assemblages, constructed of recycled scraps and remnants of pre-internet popular culture. The 'My Mother' exhibition comprises works by largely Sydney-based artists around the theme of their mothers. A wide range of media have been employed: ceramic, paint, embroidery, paper, felt, crochet, photography. The variety of materials speaks to the diversity of relationships and approaches on show here: some have investigated a certain aspect of their mother or their relationship with her, others have depicted a more symbolic, 'cosmic' mother. Curated by Inner West artist Skye Rogers - who has always been passionate about representing her mother in her artwork - the exhibition and its accompanying events encourage engagement. We welcome you to explore what each artist has brought to the table at this moving and intriguing exhibition. We also have plenty of workshops and events happening with opportunities to delve deep, have fun and express your own thoughts and feelings. A percentage of takings will be donated to the Older Women's Network, NSW (OWN). Artists
