Chinese Opera costumes on display 2023

Chinese Opera costumes on display 2023

A wonderful opportunity to view, learn and appreciate Chinese Opera, in particular, about the history and significance of the costumes and accessories. See them displayed in the beautiful Harbour Room in Hong Kong House.

Over the years, Australasian Art and Stageworks (AASI) has given numerous performances and talks on Chinese Opera. The majority of these have been Cantonese opera performances for Lunar New Year events and Spring Festivals. The performances have taken place at different venues, including the Sydney Town Hall, Seymour Centre, The Concourse Chatswood and Zenith Theatre Chatswood.

Chinese Opera has been performed in Australia for nearly 200 years. As well as providing entertainment, AASI aims to promote better understanding between Chinese Australians and the wider Australian community by presenting this aspect of Chinese traditional culture.

In addition to the collection of costumes from past performances, AASI has some valuable opera costumes from a former Hong Kong professional opera performer, as well as from a private collector. Some of these are vintage pieces that are more than 60 years old.

A selection of these costumes (both male and female), head pieces and accessories will be displayed. Information and descriptions will be in English and Chinese. Everyone welcome.
