Émilie 2022

Image
'And I dread sinking into the vertigo of unconsciousness, into the well of oblivion' … Premiered in 2010, Kaija Saariaho's dramatically charged monodrama Émilie draws inspiration from the life, and the final writings, of Émilie du Châtelet, an extraordinary mathematician, scientist, and philosopher. Unfolding as a stream of consciousness narrative, a series of vignettes during her ultimately fatal pregnancy, Émilie gives an incisive, haunting voice to women's experiences of rage, elation, grief, and despair in a society unwilling to hear them. In a concert performance, The Cooperative is delighted to present the Australian premiere of this incredible work, re-envisaged for five singers, and performed by an outstanding cast and orchestral ensemble. All profits taken from admission will support organisations working for the advancement of women's health and wellbeing, in Australia and globally. It was listed by UNESCO in its Creative Cities Network in 2014 as a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Arts. The Magical Craftsmanship of Suzhou director Sun Zengtian once said: 'East and West after all two different sources o

Strategies to find, test, and treat people living with hep C 2022

Our ability to meet the WHO targets in Australia is threatened by declines in annual hepatitis C RNA testing and treatment. It's been like that for almost 50 years … Until my youngest sister walked out into her suburban backyard and took her life.' After her younger sister died suddenly, broadcaster Indira Naidoo's world was shattered. Turning to her urban landscape for solace, Indira found herself drawn to a fig tree overlooking Sydney harbour. A connection began to build between the two - one with a fractured heart, the other a centurion offering quiet companionship while asking nothing in return. Albion 2022

Image
Mike Bartlett's hit UK drama, Albion , will receive its Australian premiere at Seymour Centre presented by Secret House, New Ghosts Theatre Company and Seymour Centre. Against advice from family and friends, businesswoman Audrey buys an old house in ruins and dreams of restoring the house's once magnificent garden to its former glory, as a tribute to the son she recently lost to war. As she clings to the significance of the past, she searches for seeds of hope in the future. Praised by The New York Times for its richly imagined drama and characters, Albion is at once a sweeping family saga and a powerful parable about patriotism, nostalgia and national identity in Brexit-era Britain. Deliberately drawing parallels with Chekhov's masterpiece, The Cherry Orchard , Bartlett paints a poignant, shrewdly funny portrait of a nation torn between preserving the past and radically reforming the present, and Albion played to packed houses and critical acclaim upon its debut in 2017

Dreams of Flight - in conversation with Fran Martin 2022

Image
In Dreams of Flight (Duke University Press, 2022) Fran Martin, Associate Professor and Reader in Cultural Studies at the University of Melbourne, explores how young women from China negotiate competing pressures while studying in Australian universities. Unmarried middle-class students from the single-child generations are encouraged to develop themselves as professionals through international education, and mould themselves into independent, cosmopolitan, career-oriented individuals. But they also face strong neo-traditionalist pressures from the state, society and their families that push them to marry and have a family before the age of 30. A/Professor Martin's extensive ethnographic and interviews-based research with students and their parents reveal their motivations for studying in Australia, and their experiences while here in everyday life in our cities, media use, work, romance, religion, and evolving feelings about their homeland. She uncovers the power of international e
