Journeys in Watercolours: Synagogues of India Exhibition 2022
The Exhibition features selected reproductions of the original, evocative watercolours of the beautiful synagogues of India by Professor Jay A. Waronker Ph.D., Professor at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, GA.
The event will feature a curated selection of books, an artist talk and Q&A session, music, refreshments and food.
Remarkably, some of these synagogues date from the mid-sixteenth century and are among the oldest synagogues in the Commonwealth. These synagogues were built by the five distinct Jewish communities which thrived and flourished in India for centuries without persecution for more than 1,800 years. The Exhibition sends a poignant message of inclusivity and tolerance.
The 'Journeys in Watercolours - The Synagogues of India' Exhibition is a collaboration between the Indian Jewish Association of Australia and New Zealand (IJAANZ), Emanuel Synagogue Woollahra and Plus61J. IJAANZ extends its sincere thanks to Rabbi Jeffrey Kamins, Senior Rabbi, Emanuel Synagogue, Ilona Lee AM, General Manager, Plus61J, the Israel Embassy, and Marina Capponi, Programming Director, Emanuel Synagogue.
The works will celebrate and inform the vibrant Jewish Diaspora and wider audiences in Australia and New Zealand about the beautiful synagogues of India, the history, rich heritage, diversity, culture - and resilience of the Jews.
