All three members play six-string acoustic and electric guitar, bass and also used their instruments as percussion and vocal beatbox. One minute they play in unison, the next in harmony, then across and against each other Their music is calm, then chaotic, beautiful, then forceful. Josh Cohen: Radiohead for Solo Piano 2022

Image
One of the world's most iconic, avant-garde rock bands meets one of Australia's most adventurous pianists as Radiohead gets reimagined on a grand by Melbourne musician and composer Josh Cohen.   The classically-trained Cohen knows how to hold an audience captive. Beginning his impressionistic, piano-based covers of the band on YouTube, they quickly went viral, racking up millions of online views. Radiohead - a band famously protective of its reputation - gave its full endorsement to Cohen's idiosyncratic arrangements, whose songbooks were released by the group's music publisher.   From  OK Computer  to  A Moon Shaped Pool  and beyond, Cohen's intricate and improvisational approach pulls the emotional and rhythmic core out of Radiohead's sound, and reconfigures it as a dance across the keys, more raw and alive than ever. Cohen will be joined for the performance by Joshua Batty of MindBuffer, whose mind-melding visual design are sure to tilt the experience into tr

The battle outside is one of the most savage in the entire war. She knows that to go to the streets is virtually a death sentence or rape, but she must find food within the next few hours or her baby will certainly die. For Georgina, there is no choice. Alone and completely vulnerable, she heads out into the freezing cold. 'I invite you to share in my mother's amazing journey of survival: She was a carefree young woman thrust into the worst tragedy in human history - emerging triumphant, and successfully immigrating to Australia - where 'the stre

Cash Savage and the Last Drinks 2022

Image
In November 2020, growling Melbourne outfit Cash Savage and the Last Drinks released  Live At Hamer Hall , a live album recorded in an esteemed venue that on this night was conspicuously audience-free. Even under those COVID-conditions, the show was raw and electrifying. If that's how this lot plays to no one, Speakers Corner is in for a mad one. Led by songwriting force of nature Cash Savage, the band has released four outstanding albums, including 2018's  Good Citizens  on the fiercely independent Mistletone Records. Cash Savage and the Last Drinks make songs full of grit and political fury, cut through by knockabout Australian charm. Onstage, the band becomes an unstoppable force, with Cash prowling alongside six road-hardened musicians (behold Kat Mear's show-stopping contribution on the violin). The battle cries of 'Rat-a-tat-tat' and 'Fun in the Sun' will sound oh so sweet against the Sydney skyline. 'Self-assured, brawling rock'n'roll…[pai

The Beths 2022

Image
The Beths is that rare band that gives you all the emotions in 1 gig. The plucky 4 piece out of Auckland, New Zealand is fronted by vocalist and guitarist Elizabeth Stokes, whose frank and self-deprecating lyrics are lovingly pored over by fans. Stokes has also picked up two nominations for New Zealand's most prestigious songwriting honour, The Silver Scroll Award.  The Beths burst onto the scene with 2018 debut album, Future Me Hates Me, powered by the catchy harmonies and fast riffs of its bittersweet title track. The band's 2020 follow-up, Jump Rope Gazers, mines the same themes of anxiety and self-doubt through slower tempos and the occasional power-pop chorus.  A true 'band's band', The Beths have winningly supported the likes of Pixies, the Breeders, Weezer and Death Cab For Cutie. Jump Rope Gazers opens with the song 'I'm Not Getting Excited', but you have our permission to get excited. 'Hook-filled songs filled with energy and attitude, wr

The Reckoning: Pandemic Politics 2022

Image
Sydney Festival and UNSW Centre for Ideas present Politics has been transformed by the COVID era, with national power siphoned towards state premiers, the allergy to massive government spending thrown out the window and scientific advice brought to the fore. But as well as new developments, the pandemic has placed existing fault lines in our relationship with politics and politicians under the microscope. What do Australians want from their governments? Who can we trust if our politicians don't represent us or tell us the truth? If corruption and pork barreling in politics are no longer a source of shame, what else will we be willing to accept? Comedy writer and performer Mark Humphries will rip into our pollies in a short stand-up performance as presenter and journalist Fran Kelly chairs a discussion between political correspondent Laura Tingle, constitutional lawyer Rosalind Dixon, and political commentator and author George Megalogenis. The group is no stranger to sweaty nights at Sydney Festival, after a scalding hot sell-out show in 2020. Elsewhere, Cumbiamuffin has kickstarted dance floors at festivals across Australia, including Manly Jazz, Sydney Fringe and Byron Bay's iconic Bluesfest.   Please know that you will not remain seated for the duration of the performance.  'Cumbiamuffin are a musical force…filling

Busby Marou 2022

Image
Settle into the summer night with the warm vibes and great tunes of the mighty Busby Marou, Rockhampton's favourite musical sons and one of Australia's hardest working live bands.  Since they first bonded over beers at a pub some 15 years ago, Queenslander Tom Busby and Torres Strait Islander Jeremy Marou have gone from strength to strength. Releasing a gold-selling debut in 2010 and collecting multiple APRA awards for fan favourite hits 'Biding My Time', 'Best Part of Me' and 'Over Drinking Over You', Busby Marou has rocked major festivals and supporting icons like Elton John and Dolly Parton. As Australian as a sausage sizzle, they've even become the face - and sound - of Tourism Queensland campaigns.  Beloved for their easy on-stage rapport, distinctly Australian storytelling and vocals that hang together like old mates over beers, the boys of Busby Marou are local legends wherever they land. The Reckoning: The price of COVID 2022

Image
While many of us (sorry Melbourne) spent 2020 believing we had escaped the worst of the pandemic, 2021 brought forth the ugly reality of living with the virus. Even as the nation returns to something that feels like normal, beneath the thrill of gigs, gatherings and barista coffee, it's clear the pandemic has changed the picture for good.  We've seen our governments and fellow citizens succeed at some things, fail badly at others, and discovered who 'essential' workers really are. After two years of arguing about how to 'balance' public health and the economy, what have we actually learned?  Chaired by author and broadcaster Benjamin Law and featuring economist Richard Holden, business leader and CEO Sam Mostyn and youth advocate Yasmin Poole, this talk will explore how the last two years have challenged our health systems, and shown us what went missing as we globalised our economy.  The incomparable Virginia Gay will close the conversation with a monologue fro

The Reckoning: Australia's Turning Point 2022

Image
Sydney Festival and UNSW Centre for Ideas present: What defines Australia in 2022? We've always pinned our identity on land and sea. As an island full of unique animals and home to the oldest living culture in the world, we've lived off the land one way or another, be it from bush tucker or mining the minerals in our red earth. But as our environment suffers, and pressures from the outside world and our biggest trading partner China loom, we are at a turning point. At the heart of our identity the Uluru process - so pivotal and full of potential - remains unrealised, the Great Barrier Reef is in grave danger, and koala populations are heading towards extinction. Can we resolve our relationship with our Indigenous people? Can we save our environment? Can we adapt to changing global power dynamics? Walkley award-winning journalist Sarah Dingle chairs this critical discussion on national identity and action, drawing on perspectives from journalists Peter Hartcher and Stan Grant, a

The Reckoning: Goodbye Misogyny 2022

Image
Sydney Festival and UNSW Centre for Ideas present: In 2021, a legion of women stood up and said they weren't going to take it anymore, calling out violence, harassment and misogyny. In a powerhouse panel chaired by TV and radio presenter Yumi Stynes and featuring ABC reporter Louise Milligan, constitutional law expert Gabrielle Appleby and author and former Liberal turned Independent Federal MP Julia Banks, words will not be minced and bushes will not be beaten around. They'll reflect on exposing the Canberra bubble, holding a High Court judge to account and putting the spotlight on political misogyny, ultimately stepping out an action plan to give misogyny the flick - for good. This event will close with a live music performance from the fierce and fabulous Jaguar Jonze, a vocal advocate for victims of sexual assault and harassment in the music industry whose recent single 'Who Died and Made You King' is a powerful new addition to the #MeToo songbook.
