Ecdysis 2021

Image
Ecdysis is a scientific term describing the process by which reptiles shed their skin to allow for new growth. Cherine Fahd's video installation brings together forty-four monumental video portraits of women of different ages and walks of life, engaged in an act of struggle and surrender with the artist. Luminously projected in a darkened space, the shedding of skin suggested by these portraits raises tensions between control and release, bringing us to the precipice of transformation. Each subject's performance tells a different story spanning resistance and acceptance, tenderness and strength, authority and vulnerability.  Curated by Daniel Mudie Cunningham and Jeff Khan. Towers & Spires: Vaucluse Paintings 2021

Image
Towers & Spires: Vaucluse Paintings takes a geographic journey down Old South Head Road in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Kevin McKay is a Sydney-based plein air painter. With an interest in the colonial history and architecture of the Sydney South Head peninsula and surrounding region, McKay's paintings juxtapose the evidence of contemporary life with the historic beacons and stone structures of the past. 'This series explores Sydney's South Head peninsula, where a cliffside lighthouse, signal station and sandstone church stand as landmarks in space and time. With histories dating back to the earliest days of colonisation, this site is dedicated to maritime navigation and communication. Semaphore signals would alert the city to new arrivals and warn if a ship was carrying infectious disease on board. The virtuous qualities of beacons and the stoic form of stone structures, assume obvious metaphoric connotations. I am looking to place these in a surrounding residenti

A new decade for women's safety? 2021

Image
Australia's National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children is up for renewal in 2022. It will set the agenda for the next 10 to 20 years on key priorities and investment areas. Violence against women and children is an ongoing national emergency. It affects every community in Australia, and results in the death of at least one woman a week on average - a rate unchanged during the decade covered by the current National Plan. After years of campaigning, First Nations women and children will have a specifically developed plan for their communities. It's an acknowledgement by the government that the 'mainstream' plan has silenced the voices and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. But with rates of violence against women increasing and evolving, is there confidence the next plan will do better to deliver safety than the last, and rectify the flaws in process and approaches? Electric Keys 2021

Image
At the end of 2020 the Powerhouse acquired an important private collection of keyboards from the middle of the 20th century, a period prior to the rise of synthesisers. These electronic keyboards complement the existing collection of mechanical instruments, such as pianos and organs from the early 1900s, and a small collection of significant synthesisers. Together they create a unique opportunity to explore modern keyboard development and its contribution to the genres of jazz, pop, rock, soul and prog-rock. A highlight of Electric Keys is the Model B3 Hammond organ, released in 1955. Invented by Laurens Hammond, a mechanical engineering graduate of Cornell University, USA, Hammond organs were manufactured from the mid 1930s and by 1966 an estimated 50,000 churches across North America had installed a Hammond. While the company did not originally target its products to professional musicians (believing that was not a big enough market) the sound of the B3 with its 'harmonic percuss

Imagine by Catherin Bennett 2021

Image
Emanating passion, energy and positivity, Catherin's first solo exhibition explores the colours, shapes and moods of flora, Australian nature and the human body, comprising a series of contemporary styled pieces with a touch of tradition; small and large; framed and on canvas; in oils and watercolours. Descending from a family of artists who emigrated from Europe in the 1940's, Catherin fondly remembers watching her Hungarian Grandmother paint and sketch, and the strong aroma of oil paints and turpentine. Catherin's first floral pieces are thoughtfully dedicated to her first inspiration, her Grandmother. 'I .. love that every person who looks at one of my artworks has a unique interpretation of it. This is why I titled my upcoming exhibition 'Imagine', as all of us have dreams and emotions that can be expressed through colour, art, dance, sculpture, music, and many other forms.' 'John Olsen: Goya's Dog' 2021

Image
The National Art School is proud to present John Olsen: Goya's Dog , a powerful exploration of an extraordinary Australian artist - from his creative awakening in Spain, through the darkness that threatened to overwhelm him at times, and his ability to reach for the light, pursuing a long and acclaimed career. John Olsen is one of the National Art School's most renowned graduates, a NAS Fellow, AO and OBE. Goya's Dog features over 50 major works, sketchbooks and drawings, many not seen in public for generations. The exhibition begins in Spain during the mid-1950s when the young artist became entranced and inspired by Spanish culture - art, poetry and music - which drew him to explore a darker, more vulnerable side of his personality and experience. Another visit to Spain in the mid-1960s transformed his palette, which became more dynamic and bold. 'It was a remarkable experience because Spain was completely isolated from the modishness of the 20th century, it was still

PRC energy policies: status- trends- implications for Aus 2021

Image
One year after the People's Republic of China (PRC) committed to achieving carbon neutrality, significant progress has been made and significant challenges have emerged. The PRC's national carbon market has begun full operation and is expected to soon extend from the power sector to others, including steel and cement. Administrative measures focused on curbing emissions are increasingly strengthened. The central government's energy consumption and energy intensity targets are enforced with regular checks by the Central Inspection of Ecological and Environmental Protection (CIEEP), as well as the joint force of the party's central disciplinary agency. The efforts to reach peak carbon, however, also face challenges. Many regions propose radical carbon targets and have adopted 'campaign-style' emissions reduction. The current global surge in energy prices and widespread power shortages will likely force the PRC to adjust its climate and energy policies. How is the

Maria Stuarda at the Sydney Opera House 2022

Image
Every aria demands greatness. Some interpretations transcend talent to reach for the sublime. With its intense trills and stratospheric highs,  Maria Stuarda  calls for a true prima donna to portray the ill-fated monarch in this concert rendition of Donizetti's bel canto masterpiece. Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko takes up the mantle of La Superba Montserrat CaballĂ© and La Stupenda Joan Sutherland, giving us a Mary Queen of Scots of lyrical beauty. Her coloratura finds its counterpoint in the darker tones of mezzo-soprano Carmen Topciu, who debuts as Mary's steel-hearted cousin Queen Elizabeth I. Bound by blood but divided by their beliefs, the rivalry between Mary and her former ally, the brilliant Virgin Queen, couldn't be more bitter. Hanging in the balance is the English throne, and Leicester's love. French bass Nicholas TestĂ© is masterful as Mary's confessor Talbot while Indian-born Australian tenor Shanul Sharma makes The Earl of Leicester irresistible with a

Turandot at the Sydney Opera House 2022

Image
As the moon rises, a death cry wails through imperial Peking. Torture and death mean nothing. Freedom means everything. Can the princess win her heart's desire? When Pavarotti sang out the top B in Puccini's 'Nessun dorma' across a huge crowd at the 1990 FIFA World Cup, the world collectively held its breath. A generation of football fans were learning what opera was all about - music that can transport you to another world, another place, a place where emotion wells up inside you at the sound of a single note. 'VincerĂ²', the tenor cries - 'I will win! I will WIN!' Few had seen  Turandot  - Puccini's opera about a brutal princess and an impossibly brave suitor, who will make any sacrifice to win her love. How many of the millions of people who watched that broadcast suddenly had an inkling of what the power of that music can be? Turandot  is a fantasy opera of poetry and myth, set in an exotic world where fear and love go hand in hand and death is al
