Spontaneous and Uncommissioned 2024

Image
This mural, incorporates two artworks, self portrait , 2009 by Jason Wing and we grew here , 2009 by Vernon Ah Kee, which were painted one afternoon in 2009 spontaneously by the artists on the wall of the former office of Australian Design Centre in Church Laneway, Surry Hills. At the time, Vernon and Jason were part of the Object Gallery exhibition, Seize / Collide curated by Nicole Forshew. Since then, Sydney has become a canvas for public art, but back then it was rare to see such a spontaneous and uncommissioned artwork by two First Nations artists. This mural has been recreated for Object Space by Jason Wing as part of ADC's 60th anniversary celebrations. Jason also recently worked with ADC to produce the Gadigal Mural at the rear of the Centre in Barnett Lane, Darlinghurst. Designed by Jason, with First Nations Creative Producers Dennis Golding and Lucy Simpson, Gadigal Mural is a collaborative artwork referencing both the topographical patterning and material culture of G...

Vivid at the Sea Museum 2024

Image
This immersive experience of animation, sound, and storytelling is projected onto the museum rooftop as part of Vivid Sydney, Humanity. Developed by Studio Gilay, Barani is a bittersweet narrative set in Warrane (Sydney Cove) 500 years ago, juxtaposing humanity's current existence in the Anthropocene with a time of harmony between humans and nature. The story, rich in historical and cultural value, prompts audiences to reconsider the history of the land under their feet. Barani intricately explores the dynamics of a mother-son relationship on the cusp of coming-of-age, emphasising themes of love, connection and independence. The symbiosis between humanity and the natural world is a crucial element, underscoring the importance of mutual care for the environment and each other. As the story unfolds, Barani encourages the audience to connect with ways of the past and review our current coexistence with nature. Barani is inspired by longtermism and looks to First Nations knowledge t...

John Lacey: Landscape + Expression 2024

Image
South Australian artist John Lacey has been painting professionally since 2004. It was at this time he changed medium to oil, this was after painting impressionistic landscapes in watercolour and acrylic for the previous 20 years. The change to oil has seen him win numerous art prizes including the coveted Corporate Prize at the Victor Harbor Rotary Exhibition 2007. Having a keen interest in design and a gradual leaning toward the abstract, sees John simplify yet push the boundaries of the landscape without destroying the sense of place. This results in the viewer quite often being absorbed by the strong design, vibrancy or at times restfulness of colour, tone and texture. https://upnext.com.au/event/john-lacey-landscape-expression-2024/ https://bit.ly/4dWAA0j Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney/ Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Check out our Youtube channel UpNext Sydney Youtube Check out the our tinyurls: https://tinyurl.com/upnextsydney https...
