Godwin Laus: the Edge of Reality 2023

Image
The line between abstraction or figuration blurs, fades and loses meaning. Another world emerges from a painting, a personal and distinctive world, related to what is seen but not enslaved by it. 'When the veil of reality lifts, and an ordinary situation becomes strange, foreign and familiar all at the same time, a dreamlike state.' There are moments during an ordinary day, when reality thins briefly, revealing something unusual, unexplainable, a hint of a darker, stranger reality that is lying underneath the one which we experience every day. 'I did not want to go out of my way to depict the strange, or the unexplainable and the bizarre. I wanted these feelings to permeate through the works very subtly just like the feeling itself, brief, fleeting, to be read between the lines.' - Godwin Laus https://upnext.com.au/event/godwin-laus-the-edge-of-reality-2023 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Chec

I Am the People: Art Exhibition 2023

Image
Looking to the stars as they shone in the night sky, Zeng Liansong recalled the Chinese proverb: 'longing for the stars, longing for the moon'. It inspired him to design the Five-Star Red Flag that would change the face of a nation. First raised in 1949 to mark the creation of the People's Republic of China, a star was revealed for each of the four revolutionary classes: the working class, the peasantry, the urban petty bourgeoisie, and the national bourgeoisie. The largest star of all unifies these classes under the Chinese Communist Party. But what is the future of class in China? At a time when the nation is rapidly transforming into a global economic and political powerhouse, issues of class stratification and social mobility become increasingly urgent. Already in place are divisive social engineering policies such as the Hukou system, which splits the population into two categories: rural and urban. This geographic lottery determines the fates of millions who are pushe

Bangarra Dance Theatre presents Yuldea 2023

Image
At Yuldea, stories hover in the sky. The stars reveal a divine Songline, stretching between earth and sky. Frances Rings' first work as Artistic Director is a ceremonial affirmation of history and heritage. Yuldea awakens the earth and sky worlds to tell the story of the Anangu people of the Great Victorian Desert. Yuldea explores the moment traditional life collided with the industrial ambition of a growing nation. In 1917, the two halves of the Transcontinental Railway met at the precious water soak on the edge of the Nullarbor, Yuldi Kapi. Great metal serpents scarred the landscape, draining all water from the sacred soak. Then came the black mist of the atomic testing at Maralinga, forcing the Anangu people to leave their desert homelands where they had lived for millennia. Now memories lay scattered, like the Anangu people, displaced from their home. Remnants of colonial progress are swallowed by sand. But the Anangu endure, determined to keep strong their knowledge systems

Rigoletto 2023

Image
At the Duke's infamous parties, one man's words light the darkness with a sinister glitter. Among the glamorous girls and greasy gangsters, Rigoletto serves his master with sharp wits and averted eyes. From the moment he wrote it, Verdi knew he had a hit on his hands. The story has everything: royalty, loyalty, devotion, lust and revenge. And the music? The music is sensational, so full of hummable tunes that Verdi demanded complete secrecy from his premiere cast. The tenor was forbidden from even whistling the catchy 'La donna è mobile' outside of rehearsals. The morning after Rigoletto's triumphant première, that melody rang out in the streets: a hit for ever after. The title character Verdi called the 'greatest creation' in the history of theatre had found a home in a masterpiece of music. Elijah Moshinsky's much-loved production of Rigoletto returns to the Sydney Opera House stage, complete with its glamorous La Dolce Vita -inspired sets and costum

Benefactors by Michael Frayn 2023

David and Jane are a happy and prosperous couple. He's an idealistic architect and she's an anthropologist who always stands with him. Their neighbours Colin and Sheila are by comparison struggling. Colin's glory-days are over and Sheila is subservient and unfocused. David feels his new architectural dream, the redevelopment of an inner-city housing project, will be the answer to future home building. However as Sheila settles into her neighbours' way of life, Colin starts to oppose David's bright new view of the future. Can struggling Colin become an unlikely hero of the people? Will Jane throw Sheila out? Or will the tower blocks collapse before the project is finished? Writer Michael Frayn, creator of Noises Off, explores what it is to be human in a statistically driven world, in this chillingly funny comedy set in the 1970s. https://upnext.com.au/event/benefactors-by-michael-frayn-2023 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check out our Vimeo channe

Ferals, Flora and Fauna-The Fragmented Environment 1770-2023

Image
Ferals, Flora and Fauna, The Fragmented Environment 1770-2023, highlights the destruction of Australia's native animals caused by the introduction of invasive species by past explorers and European colonisers. The focus is on the devastating impact of domestic, stray and feral cats, which now roam over 95% of Australia and kill over two thousand animals every minute. The exhibition draws attention to the fact that while past colonisers had the excuse of ignorance, today's problem goes largely ignored. Murphy's series of works use anthropomorphic characters to tell the story of the Great Southern Land journey from the past to the present and future. This narrative poses an intriguing question about whether Australia is truly a democracy or if it has forgotten what really matters: our heritage and environment. Overall, the Exhibition Introduction sets the stage for a thought-provoking and impactful exhibition that aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting Au

A Sydney Nano Seminar: Nanomaterials for 3D Mesosystems 2023

Image
Please join The University of Sydney Nano Institute for a Sydney Nano Seminar, 'Nanomaterials for 3D Mesosystems: From Neural Interfaces to Environmental Monitors,' presented by Professor John A Rogers Northwestern University. Dr Nicholas Hunt , Faculty of Medicine and Health, hosts and moderates this seminar. About the talk: Complex, three dimensional (3D) micro/nanostructures in biology provide sophisticated, essential functions in even the most basic forms of life. Compelling opportunities exist for analogous 3D structures in man-made devices, but existing design options are highly constrained by comparatively primitive capabilities in fabrication and growth. Recent advances in mechanical engineering and materials science provide broad access to diverse, highly engineered classes of 3D architectures, with characteristic dimensions that range from nanometres to centimetres and areas that span square centimetres or more. The approach relies on geometric transformation of pre
