Blanche Tilden-ripple effect: a 25 year survey 2023

Image
This survey of Melbourne-based jeweller and maker Blanche Tilden reveals her remarkable and critically acclaimed practice, celebrated for its transformation of everyday and industrial materials into aesthetically refined, conceptually rich wearable objects. Tilden has a unique approach to her materials, in particular glass, which she explores both as a material for jewellery making and deploys as a metaphor for the connections between making, industry, the wearable object and the body. Her fascination with mechanical devices, fuelled by a desire to understand how things work, continually inspires her work. This first comprehensive survey of Tilden's career includes historical and contemporary works loaned from numerous public and private collections. Tilden has reinterpreted previous work to create new forms that expand on her preoccupations with value, mechanical movement, and industrial and architectural uses of glass, translating something of the macro immensity of the built and

Mutukaku Ngura: Motorcar Country 2023

Image
Across the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, old motorcars are laid to rest, twisted metallic and glass shards glittering under the endless sky. When a car is set alight, the plastic and upholstery disintegrate under the flames leaving behind sculptural wire skeletons and rusted bonnets and doors, reminiscent of dry desert scapes. Tjanpi Desert Weavers gather, prepare and use 'tjanpi' (grass) to make spectacular contemporary fibre art that displays endless creativity. In this exhibition, salvaged metal seat frames are used in a type of free-form weaving. The sculptures take on the shape of the frames and the weaving softens the form, imbuing it with the colours and stories of Country and culture. Exhibiting artists include: Bridget Baker l Kathy Dodd l Kim Dodd Fiona Dodd l Ngilan (Margaret) Dodd l Kayla Gayla l Collette Stewart Pinuka (Margaret) Yai Yai l Amy Yilpi Mutukaku Ngura: Motorcar Country is presented at Australian Design Centre 30 March - 24 May 2

Paul Knight: L'ombre de ton ombre 2023

Image
'Paul Knight: L'ombre de ton ombre (The shadow of your shadow)' presents new and recent photographic, textile and machine learning works that employ the artist's relationship with his partner as an index of time, invoking the intimate present alongside the deep past and near future. Knight's ongoing photographic project, Chamber Music 2009-, records the life he shares with his partner Peter. Since they met in 2009, the series has accumulated glimpses into the domestic space of their relationship, with its images created through varying degrees of pre-meditation and chance; often the camera timer is set so that it simply captures what it sees. While the artist's relationship provides the material for Chamber Music, Knight's hand-loomed bedsheets weave other stories into their fabric. Pursuing research into various measures of time, Knight has become fascinated with the hypothesis concerning the gravitational influence of a binary star system that triggered p

Serving the White Ensign, 110 years of the Australian Fleet 2023

Image
In 1913 the Royal Australian Navy's first fleet sailed into Sydney Harbour. To recognise 110 years of service in peace and war the Anzac Memorial presents the exhibition Serving the White Ensign . Discover rarely-seen artefacts from defining moments in the Navy's colourful history. The forbidding stern section of a Japanese midget submarine, lifted from Sydney Harbour in June 1942, a reminder of Australia under attack, contrasts with the whimsical personal souvenirs and mess deck art made by a young sailor steaming to the battle of Lingayen Gulf on HMAS Arunta . The tattered white ensign that fluttered defiantly on the doomed HMAS Waterhen as she foundered in the waters of the Mediterranean in 1941 will be displayed alongside the smart black coat worn by a WRAN telegraphist in 1945, one of the first women to serve in Australia's navy. To recognise the generations of Australians who have gone to war on great waters, the Anzac Memorial will open a year-long exhibition on the

Hannah Quinlivan: Conjunctures 2023

Image
The National Art School is proud to present Conjunctures , a major new exhibition by artist Hannah Quinlivan commissioned for The Drawing Gallery. The Canberra based artist works in expanded fields of drawing across installation, light, weaving, drawing, sculpture with time-based works. This exhibition is informed by Raymond William's concept of the 'structure of feeling'. Williams proposes that the patterns of thought of each generation share characteristic impulses, restraints, and tones, similarities structured by their conjunctural and geographical circumstances. The works in this exhibition aim to create a complex and affectively engaging visual environment that heightens awareness of the structures of feeling. The atmosphere of a place is not just a reflection of its physical environment, but is also a complex interplay between material, social, sensory and emotional elements. The new spatial drawings for the National Art School provide an invitation to explore the in

Markets at Glebe Public School 2023

Image
For decades Glebe Market had operated in the grounds of Glebe Public School. In February 2023 the existing manager decided to stop operations. In order to preserve the opportunities for the traders and the public, the Department of Education arranged for an interim manager to operate a market at the school, allowing a wider expression of interest for the market to be handled in due course. This minimised the closure to one weekend and now the markets are operating every Saturday under the name Markets at Glebe Public School with the vast majority of the old stallholders trading. Come and enjoy the vibe. Browse fashion and vintage, jewellery and accessories. Sit on the lawn and enjoy the music while you eat food from around the world. The Stoned Ape 2023

Image
Audiences are invited to uncover a rich tapestry of deeply layered audacious themes, during the premiere season of The Stoned Ape, an all-new psycho-dramatic tragicomedy coming to the newly renovated Bondi Pavilion Theatre, from 2-13 April. Exploring the format of some of Hollywood's most celebrated films, such as Magnolia , Crash , and Babel , The Stoned Ape transcends the typical three-act format by interweaving three seemingly unrelated stories that slowly reveal their true connection as each compelling tale hurtles toward its own devastating climax. In it, three families will be forever changed by Prue Cunningham (Susan Jordan), a ruthless and unethical divorce lawyer whose reckless disregard for herself, and the law, will have explosive and potentially deadly consequences. A husband's affair will bring out the hilarious worst in Prue just as her law school-dropout son and his girlfriend are about to collide with the psychotic bikie who has been supplying them with stock

Thursday 6-8pm, March 30, 2023 @ Tin Sheds Gallery RSVP for Opening Night Analogue Images presents for the first time photographs from Rory Gardiner and Maxime Delvaux side-by-side. Far from innocent, these adjacencies disclose certain nuances in the nature of collaborations and the forms of authorship they produce, the contexts and processes they present, and how they capture everyday life. Each coupling explores the reciprocal relationship between photography and architecture to establish a dialogue on how contemporary images build space. Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour: Madama Butterfly on Sydney 2023

The critically acclaimed and wildly popular Madama Butterfly returns to the Handa on Sydney Harbour stage. Under the stars, with fireworks every night as well as pop up bars and eateries, this is 'the most impressive outdoor event in Australia… You don't need to understand opera to understand what makes the occasion great' ( Concrete Playground ). Take your seats overlooking 'Paradise' - complete with a bamboo grove, a giant moon, and a rising sun floating in the harbour. The picture-perfect backdrop of the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge twinkles with thousands of city lights as night falls. For innocent Cio-Cio-San, love flutters on wings of desire. For brash Pinkerton, a flight of fancy is irresistible. On their wedding night, passions ignite. Yet, how ephemeral is their ecstatic embrace? Puccini's intimate ode to unrequited love has always been shocking. East meets West, devotion meets disregard, expectation meets disappointment. In the cla

Invincible Summer 2023

Image
In the last few years, we have been preoccupied with seemingly intractable global problems. Today there is a cautious optimism and a focus on what we can do to find solutions. The words of French philosopher Albert Camus, 'In the midst of winter I found there was, within me, an invincible summer', remind us that we have within us a kernel of personal power, resilience and persistence we can draw upon in the face of hopelessness. In this exhibition, Boesenberg, Nelson and Russell celebrate keeping hope alive, persistence and a progression to a more constructive time. Perspectiva 2023

Image
This exhibition is a peek into the world Micha Nussinov has been creating over the past +40 years. The exhibition showcases works from different periods of time that are connected through the revisiting of ideas, symbols and themes. Given new life and continuing with a consistent narrative, Micha's art process relates to the concept that time moves in a spiral rather than linear, with moments from the past and present aligning so deeply that the artist describes how it teleports him to past memories and lived moments. Micha is a self taught, multi-disciplinary artist who has been in his Redfern Studio for over a decade. He has a deep sensitive care for collecting and reusing recycled materials and objects which he includes in all of his three dimensional pieces. He will be showcasing an array of his art, in different mediums, such as acrylic, oil and watercolour paintings, digital composites, collage, sculpture and 3D assemblages with his musical compositions as the soundtrack to h

Urritjara by Tim Georgeson at Passage Gallery 2023

Image
Our second exhibition at Passage is now open. 'Urritjara' is an award winning film by artist and director Tim Georgeson in collaboration with actor and performance artist Derik Lynch. ⁣ Georgeson has designed a site-specific installation in Passage to mirror the hypnotic mirage and pink glow of the salt lake Lake Bumbunga, South Australia. Splicing Urritjara across three screens, Georgeson magnifies the frenetic movements of Lynch's contorting body. 'Urritjara', meaning 'movement' in Lynch's Yankunytjatara traditional language, is a film capturing gestural performance about connection to country and journey through landscape.⁣ ⁣Bring headphones and scan the window's QR code to listen to the rythmic and electric sounds of 'Kalkani', a composition by vocalist, composer and didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton and improvising cross-genre violinist and composer Veronique Serret.⁣ ⁣The artists and Passage would like to acknowledge the ongoing custod

Christine Webb: Eternal Lights - Rome 2023

Image
This exhibition marks my 10th solo exhibition with Art2Muse and to celebrate I have focussed on my wonderful return trip to Italy and Rome. Having been unable to travel during the lockdown, I have been transfixed on many existential questions. In Italy where I had lived for so many years, I was able to return for the first time in three years to pack precious things and paintings, in case I was again, not able to return. It was disquieting. But as I turned my back on life there, the last gasp of summer revived me with a few exhilarating days in Rome to put it all into perspective. When you look out at the panorama of Rome you see the grandeur and chaos of a well lived life. You feel the pulse of existence as thousand year old ruins, Renaissance domes and the power of the Church rise above the noise of traffic and ephemera of tourism. As I walk through the streets and visit the museums I often reflect on other artists who were here before me and feel the awe, the joy, see the colour and

In t

Bald Archy Prize caricature exhibition 2023

Image
The Bald Archy Prize competition has been operating for 27 years and is 'notorious' for its irreverent comic and satirical depictions of well-known Australians who have graced the headlines and TV news. The Bald Archy Prize will once again put the spotlight on Australia's newsworthy characters of the past year, with Albo's ascension to the PM throne and Scomo's deposing a major focus of this year's finalists. Subjects weren't restricted to politicians though, with celebrities from the arts and sports worlds including Ash Barty, Daryl Maguire, Wayne Bennett, Olivia Newton-John, and Maggie Beer making the cut. While the Bald Archy Prize has sometimes been held in contempt by the 'art snobs', the fact that the competition has been operating for almost 30 years is testimony to the competition's popularity. David Williamson's Rhinestone Rex and Miss Monica 2023

Image
What do a classical violinist and country western lover have in common? Monica, a highly-strung member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, is forced to give up the violin because of her RSI. Left to mope around her Glebe apartment full of resentment and anger, renovating her kitchen seems like a good distraction. Enter Gary, AKA Rhinestone Rex, the little-known Tamworth country singer turned tradie turned DJ who has been tasked with the job. While they may be polar opposites with seemingly nothing in common, except a love of music, is there something deeper that ties them together? Glenn Hazeldine and Georgie Parker reprise their 2010 performances in this updated David Williamson social comedy, complete with a musical trip down memory lane. https://upnext.com.au/event/david-williamsons-rhinestone-rex-and-miss-monica-2023 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Check out our Youtube channel UpNext Sydney Youtube
