Dancing in Fetters 2023

Image
Dancing in Fetters - the culture of convict dance is a national tour that draws on the doctoral research of historian Dr Heather Blasdale Clarke. It sheds a light on a largely unknown aspect of life in the early penal colony and the nature of dance as an expression of freedom, defiance and self-identity. When we think of convicts, we don't tend to think of music and dance, but dance was an integral part of everyday life and one of the most popular forms of recreation in the early colony. Convicts danced to escape the drudgery and harshness of their existence. It provided social cohesion, a sense of belonging and cultural identity in a strange new land. Free or by gold coin donation. Wednesday 1 February - Friday 28 April 2023. Plus join us on Friday 3 February 2023 at Cadman's Cottage from 11am - 1pm for a special afternoon, filled with rich music, dance and history. https://upnext.com.au/event/dancing-in-fetters-2023 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check ou

One Woman Show 2023

Image
Direct from London's West End, Sydney expat Liz Kingsman, brings her critically acclaimed, smash-hit meta theatrical comedy One Woman Show home for its international premiere. This show within a show is 'an uproarious spoof' (Telegraph) of the genre from which it borrows its title; a 'gloriously daft' and 'dazzlingly inventive' (Evening Standard) parody of well-worn tropes in female story telling. The Guardian's Number 1 Comedy Event of 2021, One Woman Show 'renders its audience punch-drunk with gags, meta-theatrical tricks - and with the excitement that comes when a bold voice, beautiful show-construction and a brilliant sense of humour combine' (The Guardian). https://upnext.com.au/event/one-woman-show-2023 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Check out our Youtube channel UpNext Sydney Youtube

About Ringu Tulku Rinpoche Ringu Tulku Rinpoche was born in Kham Lingtsang, in Eastern Tibet, and was recognized by His Holiness the Sixteenth Gyalwang Karmapa as the incarnation of one of the tulkus of the Kagyüpa Ringu monastery. Forgotten 2023

Image
This 'haunting' play was a sellout success in 2019 and returns to the Riverside Theatre with a professional cast of young drama graduates. It tells the true tale of one of the few female rebellions in History. Abused incarcerated convict women, dying of starvation due to government incompetence and indifference, go on strike (our first factory strike). When their appeals for food fall again on deaf ears they break through the heavily fortified factory gates to appeal to the colony. It helps bring down the Governor, but despite attempts to find the ringleaders the women stay silent, sadly so does their bravery- wiped from government records and our History- till now. https://upnext.com.au/event/forgotten-2023 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Check out our Youtube channel UpNext Sydney Youtube
