Speakers Corner 2022

Image
With 22 nights of live music, DJs, a dash of comedy and a splash of street art, all roads lead to Speakers Corner this summer.  Fun, fiery and proudly local, Speakers Corner is a place to tell it like it is through live performance and have a cracking good time about it. This is what Sydney sounds like - all its guts, glory and glitter packed into one corner in the heart of the city. With a bar, of course.  If you've been lurking around long enough, you'll remember Sydney's original Speaker's Corner as a place for debate, eccentricity and free speech - where anyone could jump on a ladder or milk crate and make themselves heard. This summer we've swapped milk crate for main stage to showcase a diverse line-up of Australia's finest musicians, comedians and voices of the future.   Be it jazz, indie, punk, funk, americana, electronica or belly laughs you need, this is the corner for it. With both a sunset shift and a late shift in play, our open-air gig series will ...

French Connection with Alexis Bergantz 2021

Image
In the late nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, Australian Britons looked to France with awe and suspicion. French Connection delves into the rich and complex history of Australia's fascination with French culture and of the French presence in Australia. It takes up common tropes about haute cuisine or haute couture, and clichés about the supposed decadence and licentious nature of the French and places them within a global frame to interrogate how a love of things French influenced people's lives and contributed to the making of Australia. About the speaker:  Alexis Bergantz is a lecturer in Global & Language Studies at RMIT University. His research focuses on Franco-Australian history, the French Pacific and New Caledonia. He co-chairs the Research Committee of the Institute for the Study of French-Australian Relations (ISFAR), and his first book,  French Connection: Australia's Cosmopolitan Ambitions  was published by NewSout...

Public lecture: Australian Armour at Long Tan 2021

Image
On the afternoon of 18 August 1966, Delta Company of 6th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (D/6RAR), fought a desperate battle with a force of North Vietnamese regular troops, a main force regiment of some 2,500 men about 1,000 of whom directly engaged the Australians. The battle became famous as the Battle of Long Tan. 18th August is now commemorated by all Vietnam Veterans as their day. The unit had been deployed to South Vietnam in 1965. No 3 Troop, commanded by Lieutenant Adrian Roberts, was given the task of lifting an infantry company to reinforce Delta Company.
