Instrumental: Collections from Science 2024

Image
The next iteration of of our ongoing exhibition, Instrumental: Collections from Science includes a range of tools that physiologists and students have used to understand the functions, mechanisms, and internal processes of living organisms and their parts. Physiology teaching began at Sydney University by 1884, after Anderson Stuart became the Professor of Anatomy and Physiology and led the establishment of the medical school the year prior. From the outset, experimentation and the use of physiological instruments were included as part of the curriculum. Physiology is the scientific study of how living things function. It became an independent discipline during the 19th century, spurred by increasing experimentation, teaching, new professional journals and societies, and advancements in instrumentation - including the invention of key recording instruments like the kymograph, sphygmograph, myograph, and more. https://upnext.com.au/event/instrumental-collections-from-science-2024/ http

Landscapes 2024

The prestigious Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW was established in 1897 for 'the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours, or for the best figurative sculpture by Australian artists Utopia Art Sydney has a long history with the Wynne Prize. Landscapes celebrates our gallery artists who have been exhibited in the prize. In 1999, Gloria Petyarre was the first Indigenous artist to take the award. She broke down the unacknowledged, unseen barrier towards First Nations art. It took another 5 years, for a second Indigenous artist to win the award, George Ward Tjungurrayi in 2004. Yet after Yukultji Napangati won the Wynne prize in 2018 (14 years after George Ward and 19 years after Gloria Petyarre), Indigenous artists have won almost every year since. In 1995, David Aspden, more generally regarded as one of Australia's finest abstractionists, won. In 2002, Angus Nivison's Remembering Rain a block buster 6.4m painting won. Immediately the AGNS

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE - An Adaptation in Words and Music is 2024

Image
The enduring story of the romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy is presented in an intimate drawing-room setting, in much the same way that Jane herself first read the story aloud to the Austen family and their closest friends. Weaving around Austen's own words is Carl Davis' magical score from the much-loved BBC TV drama series of Pride and Prejudice. Film, television and stage icon, Nadine Garner is joined on stage with internationally acclaimed musicians Melvyn Tan and Dan Le, who will share the role of the pianist throughout the production's season, and Madeleine Easton as the violinist. Pride and Prejudice is arguably the greatest romance novel of the English language. More than 200 years after her death, Jane Austen's work continues to resonate with every new generation. It is fitting that much loved Australian actor Nadine Garner will honour this legacy, promising captivating entertainment, humorous moments and some wonderful surprises. https://upnext.

Michael Kelly 'A Retrospective' 2024

Image
As always, the source of Michael Kelly's work can be found in the sketchbooks he has kept since a student in the 1980's and which are now in the collection of the State Library of NSW. His earliest works included in this current exhibition, were shown in his first solo show in Melbourne thirty-five years ago, depicting transitory places that no longer exist. They are painted on timber panels that were later assembled into a painting/montage in his studio. The individual boards, like the pages from his sketchbooks, are often random yet are assembled to form a cohesive whole. By the late 90's Kelly was exploring the Australian landscape and studying new ways of developing his paintings with a stronger emphasis on composition. After returning to Sydney to live in 2004, Michael painted many of the subjects that he was familiar with. Working up compositions and ideas often initially documented in his sketchbooks, or from the life he observed around him. Some paintings take time

The forefathers created characters to record the trace of civilizations and the artists depict human history and culture with their brushes. Until modern times, Chang'an painting and calligraphy school has flourished, in which, generations of painting and calligraphy artists portray legends with their brushes and expound their wisdom with their chisels. In the splendid art history, they left their remarkable works depicting people's colorful lives in the ancient city-Xi'an. 'Living Structures' art exhibition 2024

Image
More than a decade since his last solo exhibition in Sydney, Bradley Eastman (Beastman) presents a series of vibrant new paintings titled 'Living Structures', paying homage to the city and exploring the symbiotic relationship between human life and the built environment. At the heart of Eastman's work lies a diligent process, where gradients of colour, measurement and grid compositions intersect to construct balanced visual narratives infused with human energy and spirit. Created primarily with aerosol paint, a delicate medium that demands precision and confidence, each painting is patiently layered with differentiated substructures and repetitive patterns that build upon one another to form a harmonious whole. This is a process honed over many years, where the artworks fabricate themselves within the parameters set by the artist's own visual language. Despite meticulous planning and execution, there's an inherent dynamism and vitality emanating from the paintings,

Karen Barbouttis: Fading Existence III 2024

Image
Karen Barbouttis works on antiquarian nautical maps, bringing them to life with exquisitely detailed pencil drawings of endangered animals pertaining to the area. Fading Existence III Many residents of the Woollahra Municipality would be familiar with the large anchor at The Gap, Watsons Bay, a memorial to the unidentified victims of the wreck of the ship the Dunbar. With a loss of 121 passengers and crew, and only one survivor, it is one of Australia's worst maritime disasters when it was driven into the reef at the foot of South Head on the evening of 20th of August,1857. The vessel was owned by Duncan Dunbar and one of a fleet of 52 vessels that travelled from England during the Industrial Revolution. Duncan Dunbar was one the most successful British entrepreneurs during this period that travelled the world for trade. Michael Rhodes, a relative of the Dunbar family, was writing a book, 'Duncan Dunbar and the age of Sail', and in his research discovered and gifted a treas

Where Have All the Flowers Gone? 2024

Image
Renowned sculptor Chen Yanyin was born in Shanghai and is the creator of several urban sculptures in the city, including the 'People's Heroes Monument' on the Bund, the 'Tree of Life' in the Pudong Free Trade Zone, and the 'Broadcast Gymnastics' on Kongjiang Road. Born in the late 1950s, Yanyin's works reflect her personal perspective of the era. From highly realistic sculptures to abstract expressions, her works resemble the gradually fading memories of the era and the childhood and youth memories of Chen as an individual in the tide of the times. Throughout her career, Chen has actively engaged in professional public art creation and also participated in various contemporary art exhibitions and activities both domestically and abroad. Her works have been exhibited in Copenhagen, Denmark (1996), Bonn, Germany (1998), Kassel, Germany (1998), Vancouver (1999), Singapore (2000), and the 3rd Shanghai Biennale (2000). https://upnext.com.au/event/where-have-a

Hangmen by Martin McDonagh 2024

Image
'The electric bloody chair! I'm told when that goes wrong they come out sizzling like a bloody steak.' It's 1965, and capital punishment has just been abolished in the UK. In a dingy, old-school pub in Oldham, the landlord, Harry, who until recently was known as 'the second-best hangman in Britain', holds court. Surrounded by a motley crew of sycophants and hangers-on, he relishes the celebrity his profession has brought him. His wife works behind the bar; neither seems to notice that their anxious, awkward teenage daughter is ripe for exploitation. The arrival of a mysterious stranger from 'the South' turns the atmosphere toxic with suspicion, and when Harry's arch-rival turns up, the clash of egos is both brutal and desperately sad. This brilliantly plotted and wildly off-beat play is a stinging condemnation of state-sanctioned murder delivered with furious, macabre humour. Winner: 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Play 'Tremendous: a departure,

Student Life: Max Dupain at the University of Sydney 2024

Image
The Australian modernist photographer Max Dupain (1911-1992) documented student life at the University in the early 1950s in a brilliant and frequently hilarious series of candid shots. They show the range of student cultures and interests in the immediate postwar years. The exhibition introduces Dupain's modernist approach to photography which combines formal architectural backdrops with candid documentary studies of student life. One series displays the student floats on which they performed and demonstrated major issues of the day.
