Checkmate: Giant inflatable chess sculptures - Checkmate Chatswood 2024

Image
Chess is one of the few games which can be picked up and played anywhere in the world, it is a poetic game that uses beautifully crafted 'mini sculptures' each with their own set of rules and movements. We love how this game requires focus and intellect, how it can be played between two people of different ages and no common language. To take this iconic symbol and supersize it , we hope to bring an element of wonder and joy to the public as they explore our gigantic chess set. In two moves, one side could be in checkmate , which one is it? Grab your camera and venture out to Chatswood CBD as chess takes over. Spot giant inflatable chess pieces: take a selfie with the king or queen, drop your best knight pose or rule the rook. It's an adventure you won't want to miss! Image credit: Destination NSW. Carol Archer - Thicket 2024

Image
Carol Archer's exhibition Thicket expresses the mystery, intricacy and enchantment of densely forested places. The works in this exhibition are inspired by regularly visited places on Worimi and Cammeraygal lands in N.S.W. Through intricate markmaking Archer conveys the wonder found in profusion of branch, trunk, and leaf. Drama, in these small-scale works, results from a contrast between deeply cast shadows and the scatter of sunlight that highlights texture and detail. Archer's etchings, drawings and mixed media works apply the simplest of materials - ink, watercolours, charcoal and paper - to a subject of dizzying complexity. Carol Archer is an Australian visual artist who lives on Worimi Country at Markwell in the Myall Lakes region of N.S.W. Her solo and collaborative paintings, drawings and prints have been exhibited in Australia and internationally, and may be found in the collections of Artbank, Bundanon, New England Regional Art Gallery and the Hong Kong Trade Offic

John Andrews: Architect of Uncommon Sense 2024

Image
This showcase surveys the career of University of Sydney & Harvard-trained architect, arguably Australia's most globally influential. From the megastructural Scarborough College in Toronto of 1965 to the high-tech pods of Intelsat HQ in Washington, DC, 1988, via a series of key projects in Australia, Andrews's designs were remarkable. But in the face of postmodernism's rise his fame quickly waned. Andrews, however, remained committed to modernism: design should make the built world better for everyone. Organised through themes including geography, urbanism and sustainability, the exhibition features period drawings, images and documents, with new photographs by Noritaka Minami. Curated by Paul Walker & Kevin Liu. John Andrews: Architect of Uncommon Sense was first exhibited October 28-December 22, 2022, at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The curators would like to thank the GSD for their ongoing support for this exhibi

Homegrown; A Critical Past 2024

Image
A Willoughby City Council group exhibition exploring how artists respond to the past to inform the future. We know the future poses many challenges, but what can we take from the past into the future? Similarly, what should we leave behind to better inform future decision making? Reality collapse, global tensions, climate change, increased loneliness, social unrest and events that will necessitate migration are but a few current and impending affairs that make our sense of the future seem uncertain. Homegrown; A Critical Past seeks to synthesise what matters to Willoughby City's artists and the role it plays in giving voice to community concerns, with a special perspective of looking at the past to find solutions for the future.
