Paula Jenkins: Shorelines 2023

Image
Paula Jenkins lives, and works from her studio, in Walcha NSW; an area that abounds with spectacular subjects in nature. Paula's distinct style depicts the essence of Australia's landscapes using predominantly oil and gouache, and her works are known for her vivacious use of colour, textures and mark-making to form her landscapes and compositions. Paula's exhibition Shorelines explores the shorelines along Wallis Lake in the beautiful Great Lakes region along the Mid North Coast. The paintings in this exhibition have particular focus on the summer warmth the lake brings. As such Paula has blended the cool colour palette of the water with the warmth of the summer light. ' Working with colour is my artistic voice. I'm constantly aiming to push the boundaries with colour experimentation and finding new ways of applying marks and techniques to allow the painting to 'sing' and have a higher energy vibration .' - Paula Jenkins, 2023 https://upnext.com.au/even

Charles Rodius 2023

Image
The first ever retrospective of 19th century Australia's best unknown artist, Charles Rodius (1802-1860). The Charles Rodius exhibition brings together over 90 original watercolours, drawings and prints - many never seen by Australian audiences - from public and private collections in Australia and the UK, including the State Library's own unrivalled collection. Rodius arrived in NSW in 1829 as a convict after being sentenced in London for stealing a lady's handbag at the opera. He worked for a short time for the Colonial Architect's Office, and his sketches of Sydney Harbour and renderings of settlers' houses from this period can be seen in the exhibition. He resumed his portraiture and teaching work after being granted a ticket-of-exemption in 1832, just as the colony was experiencing an influx of English colonists who eagerly sought images of the colony to send back to their families in Europe. While his core clientele was drawn from the public service and profe

Building on the resounding success of Pamela Pauline's 2021 'Fragile Beauty, Rich and Rare' Solo exhibition at the Calyx within the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, she returns to the Gardens to present 'Entangled', a visual journey that continues her exploration into the enchanting beauty and the precarious balance of our natural world. Nestled within the heart of Sydney's iconic Royal Botanic Garden lies a hidden gem, the charming Victoria Lodge. This historic venue, purposefully refitted as an exhibition space, is about to come alive with an immersive artistic journey through the enchanting world of Australia's flora and fauna. Guy Troughton: Brushes with Nature 2023

Image
A stunning solo exhibition by Sydney-based artist and master watercolourist, Guy Troughton, Brushes with Nature features sublime watercolours along with oil and acrylic paintings inspired by elements in the Australian landscape and the artist's profound personal encounters with the natural world. With a naturalist's eye of observation, Troughton focuses in on facets of the landscape rather than the 'big picture' capturing the intricacies and beauty of the bush - its ancient rocks, giant gums and waterways and the birds that live there. Many of the evocative works have layers of meaning - starting points for the viewer to connect in their own way. Troughton says he is drawn to the abstract shapes and the interplay of light colour and textures in a landscape. Equally, he aims to delve deeper to explore our intrinsic relationship to nature and our interconnectedness. Renowned for his beautiful watercolours and bird and animal portraiture, Guy Troughton's award-winning

As the world turns… 2023

Image
An exhibition of recent photographs by Janet Tavener. This body of work continues Janet Tavener's ongoing visual investigation into our planet's sustainability crisis. In this series, she has juxtaposed photographic images which she took in Ilulissat, Greenland (March 2023) of glacial ice from the Quaternary Ice Age (250,000 years ago) with images of submerged plastic flora and fauna. The work shows the flaws in nature's current survival strategy-the flight of many natural elements from their usual environments, now too hot and inhospitable to sustain them, for the cooler climes of the North and South Poles-against the current and grim reality of melting glacial ice. Thanatos - a group show 2023

Image
Photographers Effy Alexakis and Yannis Dramitinos join with artist George Michelakakis to individually provide their personal introspective, interpretive visual offerings - Alexakis and Dramitinos through the controlled iris diaphragm aperture of their lenses, Michelakakis through the considered interaction of paint, brush and canvas. All three capture the known to meditate upon the unknown and arguably the unknowable. Some aspects may shock, some may entice deep engagement, faith, and re-evaluation, others may enforce disillusionment or an intimate foreboding of what may await. What is it to be alive, knowing Thanatos awaits us all? What is it to have been alive, but no more? The exhibition will feature a number of discussions and lecture events throughout its display with individuals who engage with death daily on either a spiritual or physical level. 'What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason! how infinite in faculty! In form and moving, how express and admirable! In ac

The memory of water by Shelagh Stephenson 2023

Image
Winner of the Olivier Award for Best Comedy, Shelagh Stephenson's poignant and painfully funny comedy is about conflicting memories, life and loss. Mary, Catherine and Teresa are sisters who share a common past. A world of disputed bicycles, midnight ice-cream sodas, cocktail dresses and their Mum's perfumed advice. A seaside childhood punctuated by the odd monosyllable from Dad. Where does reality end and family mythology begin? Why has sibling war broken out in their Mother's bedroom? Why are past recollections still so with us? The memory of water takes a new look at the age-old traditions of recollecting family stories. A beautiful bittersweet comedy, bound by sisterly love, anger, tears and of course laughter. https://upnext.com.au/event/the-memory-of-water-by-shelagh-stephenson-2023 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney/ Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Check out our Youtube channel UpNext Sydney Youtube
