2nd Chance - One-Off Screening 2023

Image
Join us at Dendy Cinemas and see Academy Award nominated director Ramin Bahrami's documentary debut, 2nd Chance! An exploration of the life and legacy of Richard Davis, the brash inventor of the modern-day bulletproof vest. Determined to prove his risky product worked, Davis travelled the country shooting himself at least 192 times, gaining the trust and business of the US Government along the way. No one believed in his product more than Davis, but when safety questions arose, a key partner turned federal whistleblower and Davis went to inexcusable lengths to obscure defects in both the vest and his business. 'Brilliantly inquisitive.' - The Wrap 'Beautiful and… a little jaw-dropping.' - The Hollywood Reporter 'This film wowed me… incredibly bizarre… incredibly entertaining.' - RogerEbert.com Co-presented with Docplay. All attendees will be given a free 3-month subscription to Docplay! https://upnext.com.au/event/2nd-chance-one-off-screening-2023 Check o

Voices from Australia's Banknotes 2023

Image
Tiny text, called 'microprint', can be found on sections of Australia's banknotes. Not only is microprint a security feature, it is also a layer of history which tell us more about significant people on our banknotes and moments in our past. Each banknote's microprint reveals episodes of history, such as an excerpt from Banjo Paterson's 'The Man from Snowy River' on the $10, and Edith Cowan's maiden speech to Parliament in 1921 on the $50. To highlight these great moments in history, the Reserve Bank of Australia Museum has given a voice to our notable Australians, including recordings from their descendants. Experience the Museum's series of immersive audio recordings of microprint text via the RBA Museum website. Paintings by Michael Kelly and Bronzes by Alan Somerville 2023

Image
Michael Kelly | Sanctuary A new exhibition of paintings by Michael Kelly that gently and wistfully observe secluded landscapes and personal sanctuaries of an often hidden Sydney. The paintings are safe havens and invite the viewer to identify with and find shelter within the urban and parkland subjects represented. 'Sanctuary: a place of refuge, a sacred place. Just as a painting can be a sanctuary, a place to retreat into, the act of painting itself offers sanctuary and something sacred, outside of time and self. These works invite the viewer to venture into the paintings and find their own place of sanctuary.' - Michael Kelly, 2023 Alan Somerville | Bronzes An exhibition of bronze sculptures by renowned Sydney sculptor, Alan Somerville. Alan has assembled some of his favourite figurative representations - of flamenco and ballet dancers, horses and riders, life studies and personages of portent - all with his characteristic emotional depth. 'As a figurative artist I aim to

Deities by Ian Kingsford-Smith 2023

Image
Ian Kingsford-Smith has been working with three dimensional artworks from 2015, applying painted images to the surfaces of life size fibreglass mannequins, pottery, wood fragments, pottery, resin, porcelain and papier mache. In the current exhibition Deities , the artist has hand-carved wooden sculptures from Jelutong wood. Kingsford-Smith has researched diverse sources of three dimensional objects, including those from pre-Columbian, ancient Egypt, Polynesia, Olmac and Aztec cultures. These cultures produced pre-historic fertility and funeral idols, medieval votives and deities to represent their spiritual and symbolic values. The worship of deities is not a religion in and of itself, but a facet of religious expression which recognizes the existence of elements beyond human control. This form of worship has been traced to the ancient Egyptians and Romans, and is at the core of some religious practices such as those in China, tropical Africa, Malaysia, and Polynesia. The objects in th

Quest 2023

Image
An endurance performance by Noula Diamantopoulos. An interactive one on one experience with the artist that will explore in a creative way your inner innate knowing. Since 2011, Noula has embraced the medium of performance art as a conceptual and enigmatic vehicle for her continuing search for meaning, understanding and interpretation of the human psyche and the inner-self. Her performance work QUEST is an interactive and collaborative social project focused on community involvement and engagement which draws on relational aesthetics and the artist's background as a practicing psychotherapist. Participants are invited to engage in a silent conversation of questions only, in which the dialogue is handwritten and no talking is allowed. This unique process of Q&Q calls participants to be curious, to think outside of the box, and consider if the answers we seek can actually be revealed in the questions we ask.
