All levels of skill are welcome; and the more established drawers are always happy to share what they know. It's also a more social way to draw, you'll get to meet with and talk to other artists, and it's a GLTBQI+ friendly, inclusive space. As you may know, Parliament is a very intimate and cosy space, so seating is limited, if you'd like to come, make a booking or call us on 0414 235 325. https://upnext.com.au/event/life-drawing-in-the-cafe-at-parliament-on-king-2023 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Check out our Youtube channel UpNext Sydney Youtube

Workshop 2023

Image
Workshop 2023 is a student-led exhibition by recent Master of Architecture graduates: Caleb Niethe, Sarah Anstee, Kevin Hwang, and Carmelo Nastasi. Join us at Tin Sheds Gallery to celebrate the opening of the Workshop 2023 exhibition. Thursday 6-8pm, February 23, 2023 @ Tin Sheds Gallery RSVP for Opening Night The Tin Sheds sat quietly on City Road in those post-war years, until the Artists came. The Sheds had been used for military experiments during the war, but records of what was found behind their bolted doors are hazy. Over the decades, rumours began to spread, never verified, of some apparatus that could draw… These rumours had long faded to myth until Students returned to Tin Sheds this year to find in the space…a Drawing Machine. In the wake of this discovery, Workshop 2023 is a return of the gallery to drawing and processing. For a month the Tin Sheds will be a facility for students and the community to work on ideas, to spend time in a space of iteration and experiment. Cr

Knitting is…experimental 2023

Image
During the exhibition Knitting is… experimental, the art space becomes both studio and exhibition space where artist-researcher Christine Wiltshier, (gently) subverts the ordered complexity and conventional views of hand knitting. Following ready-made knitting instructions, Christine creates knitted sculptures, print works and performative making installations that embrace and make visible randomly occurring knots, tangles and mistakes in her knitting process. Throughout the exhibition, Christine will be making in the art space, and inviting visitors to join her in experimenting with hand knitting, through a series of participatory artworks entitled, Knit Play: texture + tools + tension . George Alexander & Denis Mizzi, recent work 2023

Image
George Alexander (front room) and Denis Mizzi (back room) are mounting concurrent shows displaying recent work from their ongoing proccupations. Alexander working on different surfaces with mainly dark brown and black graphite, while Mizzi concocts mixed media collage. Friends since they met at school in Darlinghurst, and born a week apart, Denis Mizzi and George Alexander have stayed in contact through the decades. Here they share a space at The Shop Gallery Glebe. For both, art is a branch of life; and art is a branch of entropy and death: for we began in darkness and even in the light we carry this darkness. Alexander travels inwards to this lyrical darkness, while Mizzi takes apart the socio-political darkness that threatens us all. https://upnext.com.au/event/george-alexander-and-denis-mizzi-recent-work-2023 Check out our website https://upnext.com.au/sydney Check out our Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/upnextsydney Check out our Youtube channel UpNext Sydney Youtube

Wanting To See: A World Pride 2023 Group Showcase

Image
The Art Syndicate is excited to present Wanting To See, an exhibition of works by contemporary American photographers Kyle Hoffmann, Lexy Potts, Jon Setter, and Brian Vu. Emotive, vibrant, and brimming with interpretive possibility, the exhibition is a celebration of perspective. This multi-generational, multi-ethnic group of artists epitomise the power of the photographer's lens to express that which cannot be put into words. The artist who works behind the camera is defined by their ability to make extraordinary that which the eye sees plainly. Whereas a painter, sculptor, or draughtsman start with raw materials with which to duplicate life, the photographer begins with life as it is. The world around us can be so overwhelming and our viewpoint becomes fixed in place just so that we may navigate it. The photographers in this exhibition prove the power of their craft to disrupt that prejudicial rigidity through bold expression and a desire to share perspective. The exhibition tak

Playtime 2023

Image
'Playtime' is the debut exhibition for Sydney based artist Nelson Nghe. It explores re-connection with the inner child and how the power of play pervades even as adults. Nelson has created contemporary works through the passionate use of mixed media which reflect a love for painting since childhood. With each canvas, he dives intuitively to create fun-loving abstractions. There is an overwhelming relish for the interplay of colour and texture while adding in a surprise or two. Each of these artworks offer a personal and unique insight into his world which he feels is best expressed on the canvas. They invite the viewer to share special moments with him in discovering the child within. All the while, letting the viewer go on their own journey around the canvas, and maybe even discover the child within themselves. Nature Collaborations 2023

Image
This show portrays the powerful connection that four artists felt with Nature during the lockdowns in Australia during the recent pandemic. When all was isolated and battened down in the world of human-kind, Nature kept on flourishing, flooding…just going through its seasons and daily rhythms, tidal swells etc. The four artists in this show have produced works that honour the power of Nature to provide humans with another world beyond the miasma of rules and regulations that enveloped Australian society at that time. Mixed media works, photos and photo- etchings convey this sense of wonderment and appreciation of Nature. All four artists have exhibited in small artist run galleries and regional galleries throughout Australia and have a dedicated on-going interest in capturing the essence of what Nature is about. Clarissa has been playing with inks, pencils, charcoal, watercolour and paints ever since she was a child. The Ocean and Faces are her two fascinations. If she is not paintin

Bus tour with Sydney Pride pioneers 2023

Image
The tour will include commentary and talks outside the bus at key sites, following the route of the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade on 24 June 1978. LGBTQIA+ activism in Australia did not start in 1978. The first activist organisations were the Australasian Lesbian Movement (originally the Daughters of Bilitis named after the US organisation); the ACT Homosexual Law Reform Society formed in 1969; and CAMP Inc., established in 1970, which became the main activist organisation. While there were arrests at the early 70's gay and lesbian demonstrations, the incidents surrounding the first Mardi Gras were the most significant and far reaching in Sydney's queer history. The difference was the scale of police violence and number of arrests. Over the course of three months in 1978, a total of 178 activists were arrested.
