Gone Riffin' 2022

Image
While taking the trawler out to catch mutant fish from the waters of Sydney Harbour, Jackson Pierce and Pat Sunderland discovered about comedy. It's a bit silly. The salty spray of the sea, the chilling bite of the wind, the exhilaration of a fish caught expertly. It's something these two know nothing about. They don't even own a fishing rod between them. But if there's one thing Pat Sunderland and Jackson Pierce know, it's comedy. And if there's one thing they know about comedy, it's this: comedy is tragedy plus time minus the sad parts and with a few jokes thrown in. After years of performing comedy in venues all across Sydney, Pat and Jackson have decided to bring their prodigious comedic expertise to bear in Gone Riffin',an all-star all-hit all-laugh comedy extravaganza that will leave you thinking 'Damn I laughed a lot just then! I wonder if it's medically possible to laugh too much. Because if it's medically possible to laugh too much, ...

Annette Bukovinsky: Colloquy 2022

Image
Annette Bukovinsky Colloquy 30 August - 17 September 2022 Annette Bukovinsky's latest exhibition Colloquy reflects upon the widening range of environmental fluctuations in our world. The Latin word colloquy means to speak and encompasses the most serious discussions or high-level and intense conversations. Rather than simply oral conversations, Bukovinsky uses the gallery space as an opportunity to create a visual language as a device for encouraging dialogue. For Bukovinsky, the planet is conversing with us in an impassioned and vehement voice through intense floods, drought, fires, heat waves, or the accelerating loss of biodiversity and speak to the intensity of our climate crisis. With this new body of work, she asks how can we begin to understand the intricacy and complexity of this crisis and how as an artist, can she explore complacency as well as comprehend an undeniable complicity? Colloquy presents a plurality of ceramic and mixed media works that explore philosophical ...

'Make Believe' Features classical Sydney-based singers Emily Turner, Ian Warwick, and pianist Nathaniel Kong and showcases the music Grayson and Keel sang in their colourful films, the stage musicals they appeared in, and the jazz standards they lovingly sang. The idea for the cabaret was born from a conversation about old Hollywood stars with friends over a virtual dinner, during lockdown, and has now been given life through the Sydney Fringe for 2022. Join us for an evening of old Hollywood glamour and yesteryear magic. Grab a drink, you'll need i...

Sandra Selig: exploring giant molecules 2022

Image
'exploring giant molecules' is the largest exhibition to date of Australian artist Sandra Selig, bringing together key examples of her interdisciplinary projects from the past two decades. Selig works at the intersection of visual art and experimental music, using humble materials such as thread, paper, light and sound to articulate intangible notions of form, space, and time. Rather than a chronological overview, the exhibition responds to Selig's site-specific and iterative practice. It presents six projects that address the dominant concerns, materials, and forms of Selig's ongoing bodies of work, including the artist's pendulum salt drawings that transform throughout the exhibition. Also included are new thread installations that respond to the gallery's architecture and spider webs captured on paper - projects that have evolved organically over time and in response to the spaces Selig works and exhibits in. The exhibition's title is a discarded text fra...

Tannya Harricks: Symbiosis 2022

Image
'Meet the Artist' 1 - 3pm Saturday 3 September 2022 - RSVP Essential 'I am interested in the symbiotic relationship between nature and humankind. Imagining a future where this relationship is mutually beneficial, respectful and balanced, not parasitic. 'In the 1930s, Abstract Expressionist Hans Hoffman coined the term 'push and pull'. I am interested in the connections between the 'push and pull' of both painting and of nature: how to balance the warm and cool; seasonal extremes; surface and depth; destruction and regeneration; and history with the present. Exploring the physicality of paint and charcoal, as material without premeditation, allows me to express what the artwork requires while editing and abbreviating the scene or subject. The action of layering, moving, and scraping off paint creates a foundation that becomes part of the geology of the painting. 'I aim to fill my paintings and drawings with the energy that I have absorbed from my fav...

Ancestral trauma clearing circle 2022

Image
'That was so amazing! Thank you so much, you held the space so beautifully. It was just what I needed, I had a lot of emotion coming up recently, love the practice and move through that and definitely feel some release and shifts.' Alisha Faye, Founder Of Sacred Sync, AUS Do you feel you're getting caught up in the hamster wheel of your parents' lives? Do you find yourself with false beliefs around your identity? No matter how much therapy, self-development, inner work and shadow work you do, you feel stuck, blocked and lost? What if you could reconnect with your ancestors and help them dissolve their pain as you dissolve yours? I used to take things personally and get caught up in my inner victim just like my parents. I would collapse into the vicious cycle of abandonment, despair and loneliness as these traumas were passed down onto me by my parents and their parents. I can now stand strong on my own. I feel powerful in my center knowing my soul's purpose and alig...

Who's the Man? 2022

Image
Give masculinity the ol' razzle-dazzle. As a dancing queen, musical theatre boy who grew up in an AFL family in a mining town in regional North Queensland, Teale Howie knows a thing or two about putting on a show. Before moving to Sydney and bursting out of the closet, he played Manly Man for 22 years to great acclaim and rave reviews. Now, he's taking you right back to this 'prohibition era' to ask, 'who's the man?' 'Who's the Man?' is a one-man vaudeville show that explores masculinity, growing up in the closet and performing in order to belong. Teale tells stories of love, friendship and fear and reveals just how he bamboozled his audience for so long. Directed by Hannah Barn, with musical direction by Andy Freeborn and arrangements by Steven Kramer, join Teale as he croons through a Broadway jazz set, serenades a rag doll and dances… hip hop? Of Spirit and Eternity: The Holocaust Responsa of Rav Oshry 2022

Image
Speaker in image: Dr. Simon Holloway From 1941-1944, Rav Ephraim Oshry was interned in the Kovno Ghetto. There, in addition to hunger and privation, the inhabitants were subjected to unceasing labour under the threat of violence. Many of the ghetto residents were deeply religious, and turned to Rav Oshry with questions of a practical, ethical and philosophical nature. Burying copies of his answers onsite, he was able to retrieve and publish them after the war, where they stand as the most exhaustive testament to rabbinic decision-making during the Holocaust. In this talk, Dr. Simon Holloway will consider the nature of the questions that Rav Oshry sought to answer - both those that were asked by ghetto residents and those that he thought of himself. We will also consider the import of his answers and what they tell us about the nature of spiritual resistance in the Kovno Ghetto. Dr. Simon Holloway is the Head of Education at the Melbourne Holocaust Museum. He previously worked as an Edu...

Heart of Country: Arnhem Land Barks 2022

Image
The 'heart' of this exhibition is the relationship to Country expressed in diverse and sometimes oblique ways by four generations of Indigenous artists from Arnhem Land and beyond.
